The Loner
The children were very lively and they set a bright mood. They got along well with one another disagreements did not last long. They always accepted each other’s differences. The children were always happy as they had friends to play with.
“Each in our familiar clique
We pass him by and never speak”
From this we can infer that they each had their own clique of children made up of the same familiar faces. Also I find that the children were a bit inconsiderate to have gossiped about the boy in low voices and from this line from the poem, “neither he nor we will yield”, we can tell that the children were reluctant to ask the little boy to join them when they were playing. Maybe if they had reached out to the boy, he wouldn’t have left mysteriously, without saying goodbye to any of them. We can tell that the children felt sad and were sentimental about the boy and his place on the playground wall from the line; “Someone had chalked ‘watch this space.’”.
